PSA: Stress in a crate isn't just damaging for a dog's mental health, it can also be very damaging for teeth! 🦷😩... We've talked about this before, but unfortunately see a lot of dogs with severe abrasion/wear to the back of their canines from chewing on a cage door or fence. While most dogs tolerate crating well (and some even love their quiet space), those who don't need to be trained or alternatives need to be explored to avoid damage to their teeth (and to avoid stress!). We recommend talking to your local behaviorist if you are experiencing this issue with your dog. This amount of damage to a canine tooth makes it at risk for fracture. As is the case with most things, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! #crateanxiety #cratestress #toothdamage #dogteeth #caninedamage #dogdentistry #veterinarydentistry #toothspecialist #mypetssmile
Look at this sweet little kitten! 10-month-old Grackle was adopted with a known overbite and jaw shift to the left, but the new owner was told that it had been dealt with and no further treatment was needed. Fortunately, Grackle's new vet realized the dental issues had definitely NOT been properly dealt with and Grackle was in a lot of pain! 😿 ... The vet that "fixed" the occlusion apparently just cut off the crown of the lower right canine, attempting to stop it from hitting the upper palate but instead just exposed the pulp of that tooth (OUCH!!!!). ... They also did not treat the lower left canine that was constantly hitting the upper lip because of Grackle’s jaw shift causing a huge ulcer (OUCH OUCH!!!!!). ... Needless to say, a tooth cannot be cut short and left without proper treatment. That lower canine tooth became severely discolored and infected by the time we saw this kitten and had to be extracted. .... We extracted two other canines as well to make sure nothing was hitting or causing issues. Grackle came back a week later doing soooo much better and the ulcer was almost gone! We are sorry you had to go through that Grackle, but we are here to ensure that proper dental care is available and that the teaching never stops! #themoreyouknow #knowledgeispower #dentallesson #overbite #ulcers #exposedpulp #kittenoverbite #kittendentalcare #kittendentistry #kittenteeth #allbetter #mykittenssmile
I LOVE my job!! How fun is it that I get to see such a wide variety of cats and dogs, all of whom have their own special qualities and cuteness??!? This handsome fella is a British Shorthair and has the most luxurious brown coat-- he is soooo beautiful and friendly! Unfortunately, his upper 4th premolar teeth were occluding too tight against his lower jaw causing bone loss and ulceration around the lower 1st molars. We were able to fix this quickly by taking out those teeth on each side, leaving him with plenty of teeth to frown with and no more pain or ulcers in his mouth. We love you Theodore, thank you for being born!!! 😻😻😻 #theodore #britishshorthair #cat #catsofinstagram #occlusion #dentalocclusion #pesky4thpremolars #allbetter #catdentist #catdentistry #mypetssmile
We recently had the pleasure of meeting this cute little Pomeranian bear in need of dental care. 🐶🐻🦷 He was rescued and unfortunately had been debarked in his past life. ... 🚫Debarking is a barbaric procedure in which the vocal cords are literally cut out of a dog to decrease the sound when they bark (now banned in some states, should be banned in all). ... ❓How does this relate to dentistry? Debarking forever scars the airway and makes the entrance to the trachea way smaller than it should be. Extra care has to be taken in order to properly intubate these patients and protect their airways. So as you might imagine, this little guy's owner was concerned about anesthesia and brought him to us. We made some necessary changes to our protocol and he did fantastic, but he had to lose quite a few teeth to make that mouth healthy. He kept his big chompers though and in the second picture, taken as he was waking up, you can see that he is as beautiful as ever! Thank you for letting us spend the day with you, cute little bear! 😘😘😘😘 #pomeranian #bandebarking #tinybeardog #sooocute #dentalcare #dentistry #littledogdentistry #pomsofinstagram #mypetssmile
We had a question recently about intraoral splints after posting a patient who healed beautifully after using one. ... 🔹Intraoral splints are one of the ways that veterinary dentists fix jaw fractures in dogs and cats. ... 🔸If the fracture is in a region of healthy teeth, we can use wire and acrylic material to splint the teeth together and hold the jaw in place. This is a relatively non-invasive way to fix a fracture and it provides a lot of stability for healing. ... 🔹When in place (from 3-8 weeks), dogs are not allowed to chew on anything hard as these can break. Once the jaw has healed the splint is removed and the patient can slowly start chewing again... ... 🔸In the case shown here, the dog was a hunting dog and we really wanted to save the lower jaw, and the splint did just that. ... 🦷 The canine tooth required further treatment in the form of root canal, but the dog went on to have a completely normal bite and dentition. ... 📷Top: Pre photo of the fracture. ... 📷Middle: Wire and sutures in place for first line stability. ... 📷Bottom: Acrylic splint over the suture and wire repair for added stability. 👩⚕️We hope you enjoyed this presentation on intraoral splints! #intraoral #intraoralsplint #dentistry #jawfracture #petdentistry #dentalspecialist #allbetter #presentation #themoreyouknow #happybrushing
